Baby Ru 'person of interest' Rosie Morunga allegedly involved in attack on journalist

A 'person of interest' in relation to the death of toddler Baby Ru was allegedly involved in the attack on a journalist last year.

The woman, 25-year-old Rosie Morunga, is reportedly facing charges in court following an incident outside a Wellington court in November.

"Police were called around 3:45pm to Hutt Valley District Court following reports of an altercation having taken place outside a short time earlier," police said at the time.

"It appears a personal item had been taken from an individual during the altercation."

An ambulance was also called to check over one person following the incident.

A reporter who works for NZME was allegedly attacked while questioning one of the defendants.

According to the NZ Herald, it was also alleged the reporter's phone and credit card were stolen and the card was later used to buy hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol.

Police confirmed with Newshub that three people have been charged following the incident.

Morunga has been charged with theft, assault, and taking a document for pecuniary advantage.

Baby Ru, now known as Nga Reo Te Huatahi Reremoana Ahipene-Wall, died on October 22, after arriving at Hutt Hospital unresponsive and with severe head injuries.

His death was likely the result of blunt force trauma to his head, either inflicted by a weapon or by slamming his tiny skull on a hard floor or table, according to police.

The toddler was living at a home in the Lower Hutt suburb of Taitā where Morunga also resided.

Morunga and two others living in the house are all persons of interest.

No one has been charged over Baby Ru's death.
