Central North Island struck by earthquake

More than 1000 people in the North Island have reported feeling a 4.6 magnitude earthquake near Taupō on Tuesday morning.

The quake was 38km deep and 45km south-east of the city. It struck just before 10am.

People from across Hawke's Bay and the Bay of Plenty reported feeling the shake.

One person in Auckland described it as "extreme".

GeoNet categorised the quake as "light".
