Child killed in driveway in Waiuku, south of Auckland

Police say a child has been killed after a serious crash in a driveway in Waiuku, south of Auckland.

Their death involved a vehicle on Mellsop Avenue at around 11:07am on Tuesday.

"Sadly we can advise the child died at the scene," a police spokesperson said. 

"Our thoughts are with the family involved, and we are ensuring there is support available for them at this difficult time."

A neighbour told Stuff the driver struck his young daughter while he was reversing out of his driveway. 

Part of Mellsop Avenue was closed while emergency services and the serious crash unit attended.

An investigation is now underway.
