Court releases Boycie Hapeta on bail over alleged taking of policeman hostage in fleeing driver incident

The 18-year-old who allegedly beat a police officer and took him hostage in a vehicle on Saturday night has been granted bail.

Rotorua teen Boycie Hapeta faces five charges including intent to injure, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a license and excess breath alcohol when he appeared on Monday in the Hamilton District Court.

Police say when an officer attempted to impound his vehicle on Saturday night after an earlier alert, the accused reversed into a police car.

The officer, who was said to have been pinned between a power box and the vehicle, jumped into the partially opened passenger door to avoid injury.

The teen is accused of fleeing with him in the vehicle.
