A woman has been arrested and a homicide investigation launched following the death of a woman in the Far North.

Emergency services responded to reports of an incident at a campground on Houhora Heads Road, Pukenui shortly after midnight.

Detective Inspector Al Symons, Northland CIB says when Police arrived at the scene, they found a woman with critical injuries.

"Despite efforts from emergency services, the woman sadly died at the scene."

A 46-year-old woman was arrested at the address and has since been charged with murder.

She's due to appear in the Kaitaia District Court today.

About 30 minutes north of Kaitaia, Houhora Heads (Wagener) Holiday Park describes itself as "authentic Kiwi harbourside camping". It also offers "budget accommodation".

Calls to the campground by Newshub went unanswered this morning.

Det Insp Symons is reassuring the community there is no wider risk, with the alleged offender and victim believed to have known each other.

"We know those in the community will be shocked and concerned to hear what has occurred in their community overnight," Det Insp Symons said, "while our enquiries into the wider circumstances are ongoing, we can advise the deceased and the alleged offender are believed to be known to each other."
