Man, 28, arrested for alleged involvement in 'targeted' hit-and-run of Waikato teenager

A 28-year-old man has appeared in court after his alleged involvement in the deliberate "mowing down" of a teenager in Ngāruawāhia earlier this week.

And police say further arrests aren't being ruled out.

Detective Inspector Darrell Harpur described the Wednesday incident as a "callous, calculated act" in which the 15-year-old boy was allegedly hit three times and dragged under the vehicle.

The teen's father told Newshub on Friday his son was a "quiet, humble achiever" who had been visiting his Nana and was walking to get the bus home when he was hit on Old Taupiri Road at 5pm on Wednesday.

He is in intensive care, with multiple internal injuries and broken bones but his condition has stabilised.

The arrested man has been since charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Det Insp Harpur said.

He appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Saturday, and has been remanded in custody.

The vehicle believed to have been used in Wednesday's attack near the Hopuhopu Sports Domain is now being combed over by investigators.

It was allegedly reported stolen an hour after the incident, and found on Thursday night abandoned in a car park at the Pukemokemoke Bush Reserve 20km away.

"Police would still like to hear from anyone who may have seen this car - a black Toyota Auris with the registration number NBE817," Det Insp Harpur said.

"We would like to hear from any members of the public or motorists who may have seen this car or have dashcam footage, who were travelling in the Huntly area, on Great South Rd and the Taupiri area on Wednesday afternoon, particularly between 4:30 and 5:30pm."

Police also want anyone who saw the car, or with dashcam footage around the Pukemokemoke Bush Reserve, to get in touch.

There is a dedicated portal for images and short videos for the public to upload into.

Anyone with "larger quantities of footage" can call police on 105 and quote file number 240410/3018.
