A 31-year-old man on an alcohol-fuelled rampage against electric vehicle chargers has himself been charged - criminally.

Police received multiple calls on March 21 about a man smashing EV charging stations on Kaimanawa Street in Taupō.

A post on NZ EV Owners Facebook group suggests the alleged offender arrived in a "bling Ranger" then took to the charging stations with a sledge hammer.

"What is it about this hatred for progress?" one commenter asked.

Shocking photos online reveal the extent of damage, with some showing police tape at the scene.

Police said on arrival officers found the man's car a short distance away and pulled him over.

The man was charged with intentional damage and driving with excess breath alcohol.

He appeared in Taupō District Court on March 27. His next court appearance is on April 23.
