A person has drowned after a group got into trouble off Raglan's Manu Bay on Thursday evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6:30pm, police said.
Rescuers located a person on nearby rocks after four in the group managed to make it out of the water, police said.
The police statement said urgent medical treatment was provided but despite efforts to resuscitate, the person died a short time later.
Police said the death would be referred to the coroner.
