Large pothole closes lanes on busy Auckland street

A large pothole, which officials initially described as a sinkhole, has emerged in Auckland this morning.

Emergency services were called to the pothole on Queenstown Road in the suburb of Onehunga at 7:53am.

Officials originally reported it was a sinkhole, however, they have since advised it is actually a pothole. Auckland Transport has apologised for any confusion.

A firefighter told a Newshub camera operator at the scene the road was "wobbling" when trucks went past which is why emergency services partially shut the road. Water was flowing out of nearby tarseal.

No roads have been closed, however, two northbound lanes of the four-lane road were closed to traffic.

Watercare said crews were responding to two water leaks on Queenstown Road.

" Repairs are underway and we expect to restore water to the 17 affected properties by about 1pm," a spokesperson said.

"At this stage the leaks appear to be unrelated to a pothole nearby."

Police said they were assisting with traffic management.
