A fisherman is missing following a water incident in south Canterbury overnight.
Emergency services were called to lower Waitaki River, near Waimate, at 7pm after reports a man was missing from a boat.
"Police were notified last night that a fisherman was overdue from a day fishing trip," police said in a statement.
"A search was conducted overnight with teams from the Otago Rescue Helicoper, North Otago LandSAR, South Canterbury Coastguard and Aoraki Police Search and Rescue staff."
Coastguard and police are continued their search on Tuesday morning, and throughout the afternoon.
It comes after several people have fallen overboard and been swept down the large river in recent years.
