Separate Auckland crashes on Tuesday morning caused traffic jams as Kiwis returned to work after Easter celebrations.

Traffic cams showed a long line of cars crawling along Auckland's Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) northbound, caused by a crash near the Penrose Rd overbridge.

After delays in the area, the crash site was cleared just before 9am, the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said.

Three motorists were also injured, one seriously, in a crash on SH16 between Waimauku and Kumeu.

St John said one seriously injured person was taken to Auckland Hospital and two moderately injured patients were transported to North Shore Hospital.

The road was earlier closed but reopened at 10am, NZTA said.
