Authorities have reopened a major highway in north Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, following an earlier truck and trailer crash.

Waka Kotahi/NZ Transport Agency shut a section of State Highway 16 between Helensville and Kaukapakapa on Wednesday morning after the accident.

"This section of SH16 is now fully OPEN again. Thank you for your patience," the agency said in an update at 1:20pm.

The crucial section of SH16 had been closed since about 10.30am to allow authorities to recover the vehicles involved in the crash.

In addition, Auckland Transport (AT) was also forced to cancel some public transport services.

Two route 128 bus services were cancelled - Hibiscus Coast Station to Helensville at 12:05pm and return at 12:20pm.

Waka Kotahi said earlier it expected the closure to be in place for about two hours, warning motorists to expect long delays.
