Officials are on high alert across the country, as a slow-moving front continues to bring extreme rain.

Residents in Westland were being advised to stay off the roads as Civil Defence worked to clear debris and fallen power lines.

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi was urging motorists to take care, especially those travelling to school holiday hotspots like Coromandel - where 30mm/h of rain was expected on Friday.

The wet weather has moved north after hammering the West Coast this week with 800mm of rain by Thursday evening.

MetService has issued several weather warnings and watches across the country.

The warnings and watches cover parts of the North Island and the upper South Island.
