Road snowfall warnings have been issued for a large chunk of the South Island/Te Waipounamu on Thursday with temperatures said to plummet.

"A change to southwesterly winds will push a much cooler airmass across our shores overnight and result in snow on some of the South Island's higher roads," said a post on MetService/Te Ratonga Tirorangi's X page.

The warnings apply to the Arthur's, Haast and Lindis passes, and the Crown Range and Milford Rds, on Thursday night and Friday morning.
