Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau speaks at Palestinian protest, backs calls for immediate ceasefire

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau has spoken during a pro-Palestinian protest on Sunday, backing calls for an immediate ceasefire.

The protest, which went from 11am to 1pm, involved more than 1000 attendees who gathered in the capital's CBD.

The group marched to Parliament just after midday where they made their way across the grounds chanting and waving flags.

"Long live Palestine," the group yelled out. "Free, free, free Palestine."

The ongoing protest action comes as more than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, after Hamas fighters crossed into southern Israel, killing 1200 and taking 253 hostages.

According to Gaza's health ministry, women and children have made up around two-thirds of those killed.

More than 13,000 children are also included in the death toll.

Whanau spoke to the large crowd of protestors, standing alongside Green MP Tamatha Paul.

She told the crowd she was there to "show my support and solidarity for our Palestinian whanau in Gaza".

"Two million people, including 1 million children, live in Gaza and have nowhere to go. They escape bombing that is destroying their homes, schools and their hospitals," she said.

"Withholding access to water, electricity, all humanitarian supplies. This is unacceptable.

"At the very least, there must be an immediate ceasefire and to end this genocide".

She added: "As these injustices continue, we all need to continue to take action, and keep this on the agenda of our Government.

"Justice is the seed; peace is the flower."

Israel has described the use of the word genocide as "outrageous", saying the war was against Hamas and not Palestinian civilians.
