Auckland suburbs set to see increased council warden patrols

There'll be more of compliance wardens hitting the streets of Tāmaki Makaurau, come Monday.

Auckland Council's approved funding for 12 more compliance wardens to start regional patrols. Eight teams are already already being used in the CBD.

Mayor Wayne Brown is hoping it'll be "prevention by presence".

A lot of the issues are happening on public transport.

"Auckland Transport have identified some issues in their transport hub," said Karen Smith, compliance wardens team leader.

"So we are putting officers patrolling in those areas at the busy time. Like when children are going to school and people going to work."

The wardens will be working in teams of two and will deal with low-level antisocial behaviour, like breaches of the liquor ban and general nuisance.

"They will use their de-escalation skills, but if they can't, then they will either escalate to Police or call a compliance officer," said Smith.

In Mayor Brown's words: "I'm not expecting them to stop a bank robbery."

Kevin O'Leary is the general manager of the North Harbour Business Association. He said it's a bandaid solution.

"We're thankful for anything extra but I do have some concerns for how effective it'll be."

The Mayor wants more to be done too.

"I'm hoping this will bring the Government in to support a bit more," he said.

But it's hoped the initiative is at least a step in the right direction.
