A Canadian national has been jailed for nine years and as many months for trying to smuggle 26kg of methamphetamine into New Zealand.
In October, Customs questioned Griffin Merigold when he arrived in Auckland from Sydney - and subsequently found the drugs in his suitcases' lining.
The drugs would've had a street value of $9 million.
Merigold was sentenced on Wednesday in the Manukau District Court, Customs said.
Auckland Airport Customs manager Paul Williams said the drug courier was working for an organised crime group.
The seizure resulted in about $25.8 million worth of social harm being prevented in New Zealand, Customs said.
"This man now faces years in a New Zealand jail and a serious criminal record against his name for when he is eventually released and deported," Williams said.
"Customs' advice to drug couriers and others who work for such drug syndicates is simple - don't do it. The criminals you work for don't care what happens to you or your families and you will get caught."
