Man shot dead on Auckland's Ponsonby Rd, manhunt underway as armed police block off street

A homicide investigation has been launched and a manhunt is underway after a man was shot dead on Auckland's Ponsonby Rd on Sunday night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene near Chapel Bar & Bistro after receiving reports of a shooting at 10:18pm.

A Newshub camera operator said a body was lying on the footpath covered in a white sheet.

Armed police could still be seen on Monday morning with a large section of the road cordoned off.

"Upon arrival, a man was located deceased," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton, Auckland City CIB said in a statement.

"Our investigation is now in the early stages to determine the full circumstances of what has occurred.”

Det Snr Sgt Bolton said the community can expect to see an increased police presence in the Ponsonby area throughout the day. 

"A scene guard has also been established and will remain in place today while our enquiries continue."

Police are now looking for the person responsible for the shooting and have spoken to a number of witnesses.

"While at this stage, no arrests have been made, police are following lines of enquiry," Det Snr Sgt Bolton said said.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification of the victim will be carried out over the next few days.

Ponsonby Rd is closed between Richmond Rd and Franklin Rd.

"Avoid this area or expect delays with diversions in place affecting all traffic, including bus services,"  Auckland Transport said at 6:15 am on Monday morning.
