Shallow overnight quake near Kaikōura rattles central New Zealand

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake that struck in the early hours of Sunday morning has left Kiwis rattled.

The 5km deep quake was felt from Kaikōura to Palmerston North, and struck 25km northwest of Kaikōura at 3:36am. 

Nineteen people across the upper South Island and lower North Island reported feeling the shake. 

The shaking has been categorised by GeoNet as 'light'.

However, some people who felt the shaking have described it as 'moderate'.

Another quake shook the Kermadec Islands area at 8:14am on Sunday.

The 4.8 magnitude quake struck south of Raoul Island and was 31km deep.
