A fallen tree and slips have blocked a major connecting route between Thames and Coromandel in Waikato.

State Highway 25 has closed on Monday morning and police said it was expected to take some time to clear.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays and can check the status of the road on the NZTA [The New Zealand Transport Agency] website," police said.

NZTA said State Highway 25 was closed in both directions between Ruamahunga and Tapu.

"There are multiple trees down. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi contractors are working with arborists to clear the site," a statement said.

"Arborists will be clearing the trees this morning. We won't know the scope of the slip until the vegetation is cleared.

"The road remains closed until further notice. Road users face a lengthy detour via State Highway 25A and State Highway 25 via Whitianga."

It comes after a fallen tree and large slip closed northbound lanes on a major Auckland highway on Sunday morning, causing lengthy delays in travel.

State Highway 20 was closed northbound after a tree came down between the Neilson St off-ramp and Hillsborough Rd on-ramp early on Sunday morning.
