A gas leak in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland is causing major traffic queues on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said in a statement the gas leak at an address on Hill Rd in Manurewa was causing "significant" traffic.

"Police are assisting Fire and Emergency services with the incident, notified to us at 2:54pm," they added.

Detours are in place, which has caused queues to build up just before the SH1 southbound off-ramp connecting to Hill Rd.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The nearest free motorway on-ramps and off-ramps are on Great South Rd (Takaanini) and Redoubt Rd (Manukau).

The left lane of the Hill Rd southbound off-ramp is closed for emergency services, said Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency on X.
