From a shooting family, Rooney was nominated for the trap event at the 2012 London Olympics, but lost the spot to Ryan Taylor under appeal to the NS Sports Tribunal.

Four years later, she captured silver medal at Rio, becoming the second Kiwi to win an Olympics shooting medal, after Ian Ballinger's small-bore rifle bronze at Mexico City 1968.

Rooney has finished no higher than fourth at three Commonwealth Games, but took a bronze medal at the 2017 Commonwealth championships.
