Michelsen debuted for New Zealand in 2009, as part of the national women's team overhaul after the Beijing Olympics, and has since compiled 291 appearances, the most by any member of the Tokyo squad, which she will captain.

She was named 2011 FIH Young Player of the Year, helping the Black Sticks to a bronze medal at the Champions Trophy.

Michelson was a member of Olympic teams that finished fourth at London 2012 and Rio 2016, but has medalled at the last three Commonwealth Games, including gold at Gold Coast 2018.

The Black Sticks women will head to Tokyo with a world ranking of sixth.

Michelson is a barrister and solicitor, and partner Sam Dawkins will contest track cycling at Tokyo.
