Tokyo Olympics: Chris Wood nets as New Zealand score stylish warm-up win over Australia

The OlyWhites have kicked off their Tokyo Games preparation in style, with a 2-0 win over Australia at Ichihara.

Second-half goals for Chris Wood and Eli Just sealed New Zealand's first win over their trans-Tasman rivals in 19 years.

Danny Hay's side squandered several chances in the opening spell, with Australian goalkeeper Thomas Glover denying Wood twice and Callum McCowatt.

New Zealand keeper Michael Woud was also in fine form, denying a Dylan Pieras shot in the opening 20 minutes.

The breakthrough for the OlyWhites came 10 minutes into the second half, when McCowatt was brought down in the box, allowing Burnley's Wood to convert from the penalty spot.

New Zealand doubled their lead seven minutes from time, when Just fired a rocket from outside the box past Glover into the top corner of the net.

Newshub understands NZ Football hopes to organise one more warm-up game before the OlyWhites' first official Olympic match against South Korea on July 22. They will also play Romania and Honduras in pool play.

The squad hopes veteran defender Michael Boxall will also join the side for the tournament, after injuring his thigh playing for Minnesota in Major League Soccer.
