Tokyo Olympics: Dame Valerie Adams lays down Olympics marker with shot put victory at Diamond League in Stockholm

Dame Valerie Adams has laid down an impressive marker leading into the Tokyo Olympics, winning the shot put at the latest Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.

Competing at a Diamond League event for the first time since 2018, Dame Valerie, 36, threw a best of 19.26m, 21cm clear of her closest rival, Portugal's Auriol Dongmo, with American Maggie Ewen third.

"This was my first Diamond League since 2018," Dame Valerie says. "Since 2018, I've had two kids, so I'm very happy."

The Tokyo Games will be Dame Valerie's fifth Olympics, after Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Dame Valerie won gold at both Beijing and London, as well as silver in Rio, finishing second behind Michelle Carter of the USA.

There are two Diamond League meets - Monaco from July 9 and Gateshead from July 13 - before the start of the Tokyo Olympics begin on July 21.
