Tokyo Olympics in Pictures: Wednesday, July 21 - Football Ferns open NZ Games account against Australia

The result may not be what they hoped for, but the Football Ferns have become the first Kiwis in action at the Tokyo Olympics.

Drawn into the 'Pool of Death', the NZ women fell 2-1 to Australia, with even harder matches against world champions USA and Rio 2016 silver medallists Sweden looming over coming days.

Still Gabi Rennie's late goal gave the Kiwis something to cheer about in a fierce trans-Tasman clash in an eerily empty Tokyo Stadium.

Next, they face the Americans on Saturday.
