Tokyo Olympics: Kiwi weightlifter Megan Signal struck down by injury on brink of Games debut

New Zealand weightlifter Megan Signal has been forced to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics due to injury.

Signal had been scheduled to contest the women's 76kg on Sunday, only to be struck down by a shoulder injury just hours shy of her Olympics debut.

It's another cruel blow for the 31-year-old, who was also denied a spot at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by injury.

Signal currently holds several national records, as well as two Oceania records.

New Zealand's weightlifting schedule now begins on Monday afternoon (NZ time), when Kanah Andrews-Nahu contests the women's 87kg, followed by Laurel Hubbard in the women's +87kg.
