The Governor-General is jetting off to China for a week-long visit to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Sir Jerry Mateparae and his wife Lady Janine are flying to China today where they'll visit Shanghai, Beijing and Harbin, which is in the northern Heilongjiang province.

He'll meet with President Xi Jinping, who visited New Zealand last year, will hold a reception for Kiwis living in Beijing, and meet with local leaders in Shanghai and Heilongjiang before returning on Saturday.
