Greens: Dairy industry's toll on environment too high

There's criticism of new figures from Federated Farmers that highlight how much dairy farmers are spending on the environment.

They show an annual spend of around $18,000 each year, on things like effluent control and planting along riverbanks.

But the Greens' Eugenie Sage says that doesn't go anywhere close to matching the toll dairying has on our waterways.

"Farming cannot continue to freeload on the environment, it's got to take its environmental costs into account and a lot of these measures are simply trying to reduce the costs," says Ms Sage.
