It's been revealed housing data on foreign buyers could be available from early next year.

New rules set to come into force in October will force all overseas investors to have an IRD number - allowing them to be tracked for the first time.

Anmd Michael Parkin asked Housing Minister Nick Smith on TVNZ's Q&A how long it'll take for the public to see that data.

Mr Smith said within a matter of months, there will be more, but did not want to specify exactly how many months.

The tax data will be more reliable than real estate agency figures, which Labour is currently using to attack the government.
