A man who covered himself in petrol and threatened to set himself on fire in a National MP's office in south Auckland has been taken to hospital for mental health checks.

Police said they coaxed the man, an international student in his 30s, out of the idea and the Fire Service then decontaminated him, according to Radio New Zealand (RNZ).

He has been taken to Middlemore Hospital.

The incident happened in the office of list MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi in Papatoetoe, RNZ reports. He was not in the office at the time.

A staff member at Mr Bakshi's office in Parliament confirmed an incident had occurred, but was waiting on further information from the office manager.
