Embattled Ngapuhi leader Sonny Tau's expected to apologise to Southland Maori today for allegedly poachng five endangered Kereru.

He will be accompanied by other members of his Runanga as well as key figures from Ngai Tahu.

The secret mission has angered some in Northland, but not Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis.

"It has been blown out of proportion on one level but on another level he is the head of Nga Puhi Runanga and it's just not something that we expect of Kiwi leaders," he says.

"He needs to be held to account."

There were suggestions Ngai Tahu wanted five live Kiwi as a compensation payment from Ngapuhi.
