Helen Clark says veto is a long-term goal

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark thinks Foreign Minister Murray McCully is dreaming if he thinks New Zealand can get rid of the United Nations Security Council veto.

Russia used the veto yesterday during a vote on whether to prosecute the people who shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

New Zealand hates the veto and wants it axed, and while Mr McCully admits it's ambitious, he is not budging on his opinion.

New Zealand's presidency on the council is nearly over, with only one day to go. That's just enough time to pay back the small islands that voted us onto the council and a few minutes of global airtime.
