Christchurch's city centre residential rebuild has been given the green light.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the agreement between the Government and Fletcher Building means work will begin around the middle of next year.
The first new homes will be built on the corner of Latimer Square and Hereford St, an area of almost 3000 sq metres.
After that another 14 blocks will be built and construction will be completed by mid-2024.
"We want a vibrant and busy CBD with at least 20,000 people living between the four avenues," Mr Brownlee said today.
"Now the agreement has been finalised and signed we will continue our detailed design work."
