Opinion: No alternative ensign flag designs? No problem

Ever since I found out the official ensign flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and Fire Service won't automatically change if the fern design wins the flag referendum, I've been eager to see what they'd look like if they did.

To me, it makes sense that all our official flags are consistent with the national flag -- and if the national flag changes, then the others should too.

I asked the Defence Force if they had come up with any redesigns of its military ensigns in the event the country votes for change.

This was the response I received from a spokesperson:

"The Flag Consideration Project is still in progress. Any speculation on its outcomes or alternatives arising from a change of flag would not be appropriate at this point."

So, I asked the police if they had any designs too.

"It's not appropriate for us to make any comment while the referendum is in progress".

I assumed the Fire Service would say the same, so I cut my losses and decided to take matters into my own hands.

Even if my Photoshop skills aren't the best, you still get the idea of what the new ensigns would be like.

Hideous or brilliant? Now you can decide.

Opinion: No alternative ensign flag designs? No problem

I know the flags won't automatically change if the fern design wins tomorrow, but it's John Key's wish for them to eventually be replaced over time.

And if that's the case, I think the voting public deserve to see what our other official ensign flags will look like.

If the Defence Force, Police et al. aren't willing to reveal their proposals (if any) then here's as close as I can get.
