Helen Clark says she is "deeply honoured" to join the race to be the next United Nations Secretary-General, following her nomination from the New Zealand Government.

Ms Clark brings a lot of experience to the competition. She was New Zealand's Prime Minister for nine years, the leader of the UN Development Programme and Chair of the UN Development Group for the past seven years.

The competition is dominated by European politicians, with foreign affairs or United Nations experience.
