Govt looking into prefabricated state homes

Prefabricated houses could be erected on government-owned property in Auckland as a response to the housing and homelessness crisis.

In an interview with The Nation programme, Prime Minister John Key ruled out a mass-state-house building programme.

But he says installing prefabs as a temporary measure is being looked into by his social housing minister.

"Paula Bennett has had a look into that pop-up housing for want of a better term. You can't do it in massive volumes, but you can do a little bit… You wouldn’t want to look at it as the long term solution."

Mr Key's currently in Christchurch for the National Party's annual conference.
