Prime Minister John Key has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on winning the Australian election and looks forward to working with him.
"I have been in regular contact with Prime Minister Turnbull since the election and have now congratulated him on retaining office," Mr Key said in a statement released on Sunday evening.
He says he already has a strong and established working relationship with Mr Turnbull.
"Australia is our closest neighbour and biggest trading partner and like Prime Minister Turnbull I believe our countries should work even more closely together," he said.
Mr Key has previously described Mr Turnbull as a good friend.
Australian opposition Leader Bill Shorten conceded the election on Sunday.
"We have resolved this election," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Sydney.
"This is a great day."
After a week of counting, the coalition has 74 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives and Labor 66 seats, with five seats still too close to call.
