NZDF's Afghanistan training mission extended

Kiwi Defence Force trainers will be staying on longer in Afghanistan, with the Government committing several more staff to the mission.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says Cabinet has agreed New Zealand's presence in the country should now continue until June 2018.

Since 2013, the NZDF has had eight personnel at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy, and that will now be increased to 10.

Mr Brownlee says the personnel are doing a "good job" in developing junior leaders of the Afghan Army.

Since October 2013, 1651 troops have graduated from the academy, which is just outside Kabul.

It is a UK-led academy that forms part of the NATO's mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces.

Mr Brownlee says NATO decided to continue the Resolute Support Mission beyond 2016.
