An American millionaire, a uni student, a former Labour leader, a local government veteran and an accounting manager are all vying for leadership of New Zealand’s biggest city.

Newshub asked five of the main contenders for Auckland mayor what they love about the city of sails.

Phil Goff has been a member of Parliament with Labour Party for 35 years.

Vic Crone is former general manager of accounting software company Xero.

John Palino is a businessman and former host of TV3 show The Kitchen Job.

Mark Thomas is a member of the Orakei Local Board.
