New Auckland Mayor Phil Goff started work on Monday as he means to go on - saying the mayoral office will be the first council body to save money, starting with the mayoral car.

He's going to downgrade from the current Holden Calais to a fully electric Nissan Leaf that's already in the Auckland Council car pool.

It's part of an effort to cut at least 3 percent from all council budgets.

"It's something that's easy on the environment, and something that shows the Mayor of the city is going to lead the way in terms of electrification and in terms of reducing our carbon emissions," Mr Goff says.

His first day on the job included meeting with the council executive team. He's yet to announce who will be his deputy.
