Tim Shadbolt will continue his reign as Invercargill Mayor, after winning re-election yet again.

"I'm absolutely thrilled of course, and very appreciative of all my rock-solid supporters who've stuck by me for 23 years here," he says.

His victory in the Invercargill City Council race delivers him an eighth term and makes him New Zealand's longest-serving Mayor.

"Thank you to all my supporters. I have, today, been re-elected as Mayor of Invercargill!! [sic]," an ecstatic Mr Shadbolt wrote on Facebook.

However, he says it wasn't an easy win.

"It's been the toughest campaign I've been involved with," Fairfax reports Mr Shadbolt as saying.
