'I could do that job and I believe I am better at the job,' - Judith Collins

Prime Minister Judith Collins. Who would have thought?

The shamelessly ambitious Corrections Minister told the world today she will be running for the top job and competing against Bill English and Jonathan Coleman.

Ms Collins says the leadership position should go to the best person for the job and simply put, that's her.

"This is going to be one of the hardest fought campaigns. I can make decisions, I can think on my feet and we're going to need every single vote we can get."

Ms Collins says you need to have a strong stomach in the role and she's prepared.

When asked about whether she thought John Key was playing favourites, the Minister says the outgoing Prime Minister has to answer and English is his choice.

Asked why she would not get behind Mr English, she said: "I believe that I could do that job and I believe that I am better at the job."

She spoke to Story briefly this afternoon.
