Newshub asked Kiwis on the street what they think of Prime Minister John Key's resignation and their reactions included shock, sadness, and some excitement.
"I'll believe it when I read it", "Is this a practical joke?" and "I'm shocked", were sentiments that echoed across the country.
Many reflected positively on Mr Key's legacy and were uncertain about who would be stepping up to the plate.
Some were looking forward to a fresh face and change of leadership: "I don't hate the guy but I guess it'll be nice to see what someone else can do," one person said.
National's caucus will elect a new leader on December 12, and now the big question is - who will replace John Key?
