Chlöe Swarbrick has put her name forward to run as the Greens' candidate in Auckland Central at this year's general election.
Swarbrick, 22, had surprising success in the Auckland Mayoral election, the political newcomer coming from nowhere to place third.
She joined the Greens in November, but to get the nomination to run in Auckland Central she'll have to beat MP Denise Roche in a vote. Ms Roche lives on Waiheke Island, where many of the Green Party's Auckland Central members live, and is understood to have a strong support base.
Ms Swarbrick said she chose to chase her political aspirations with the Greens because she believes "in their values, processes, and policy" and their "commitment to ecological wisdom, social responsibility, appropriate decision making and non-violence".
Ms Roche, who has been in Parliament since 2011, placed third in the 2014 general election behind Labour's Jacinda Ardern and National's Nikki Kaye, who won the seat. The Greens did better in the party vote, pipping Labour by 131 votes.
Ms Kaye is expected to defend her seat, despite last year's cancer diagnosis.
Ms Ardern is expected to win the upcoming by-election in Mt Albert, and it's not yet known who'll stand for Labour in Auckland Central this year - the party has allied with the Greens to fight this year's election, but is still expected to field a candidate.
"The Green Party has always encouraged young people to be part of our political process. We need young people to be part of politics now more than ever," Greens co-leader Metiria Turei said in November.
"Chloe ran a successful local body campaign in Auckland, and obviously she'll be bringing those skills and that experience to the Green Party, which is great."
The party's list rankings are also decided by member votes.
