Twelve old houses in Auckland are being turned into 44 new homes with the potential to house 240 people.

Social Housing Minister Amy Adams has been on site in Mt Wellington to see the Housing NZ development taking shape.

She says that over the next three years, the aim is to grow the number of social houses from 66,000 to 72,000 across the country.

The two, three and four-bedroom homes in Mt Wellington are designed and built to modern standards, including double glazing, insulation, thermal curtains, carpet and low-maintenance plantings.
