Watch: John Key, the end of an era

Newshub political editor Patrick Gower sums up the past decade of John Phillip Key, "the politician who defied political gravity".

It all began 15 years ago, the back-story had it all: a self-made multi-millionaire who grew up in a state house raised by a solo-mum.

It was up, up, up, and after three terms it was over and out.

He had a vice-like grip on the centre voter, he was a pragmatic politician who loved being popular.

He missed his two big goals - the flag and the TPP.

His legacy in his own words: a more confident New Zealand that punches above its weight. A reflection of himself.

Key went out on top like no other politician you can think of, he got out on his own terms.
