Bill English has mixed it up early on the campaign trail, using a stapler rather than the traditional hammer and nail to put up the first election hoarding.

It was a safety-first approach to avoid the embarrassment of his predecessor John Key's 'nail fail' when it was shown he could not bang a nail.

Asked why he had gone for the stapler, Bill English simply replied: "Because it's easier."
