Patrick Gower: Unique buzz of change hits Parliament

OPINION: A buzz. That is the only word that describes the feeling at Parliament today when Jacinda Ardern officially became Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The rise of Ms Ardern has been unique.

The formation of this Government is unique.

And the way it was decided was also unique, thanks to Winston Peters.

Behind it all has been a force of change.

Today you could feel it.

There have obviously been crowds for politicians before - think to back to Michael Joseph Savage.

But this already sets Ms Ardern apart.

On the steps of Parliament, Ms Ardern addressed a crowd of 800, promising to form an active, strong and empathetic Government.

"This will be a Government for all New Zealanders," she promised.

Then there were photos on the steps with the nieces.

It was an unofficial Kiwi inauguration - with a unique buzz of change.
