Prime Minister addresses speculation about being engaged

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern kicked off her news conference in an unusual fashion on Monday afternoon, to address rumours about her marital status.

"I thought I would upfront address some of the speculation that I know has been in the [press] gallery this afternoon over my Facebook live and the issue of where my ring was placed during that Facebook live," Ms Ardern said.

In a Facebook live video posted on Sunday evening, she was wearing a ring on the ring finger of her left hand - the spot where an engagement ring is traditionally worn.

The source of the speculation was the Prime Minister wearing her ring on her left hand ring finger last night.

But the Prime Minister dispelled any suggestion that she was engaged, and explained that she shifts the placement of the ring because of eczema.

"I am happy to confirm that I have eczema on my left hand which causes me to rotate where I wear my beautiful onyx ring," she said.

"So no, I am not engaged, I do however suffer from a small skin condition, which is not very romantic. Glad to have cleared that up."
